BC Youth Sports - Buddy Check for Jesse

Buddy Check for Jesse is a program created by Dr. Stu Gershman to raise awareness for mental health. Dr. Gershman lost his son, Jesse, to suicide on October 29, 2014. The program aims to empower and support coaches (leaders of our youth) in multiple sports to pass on a mental health message to their players and to create an environment where players step up to support teammates, friends, and family who may be struggling. The goal is to destigmatize mental health challenges and to encourage youth to support one another. Proceeds will be used for ongoing program development, resources for coaches and players, and to distribute materials including wristbands, bag tags, green tape and other items so players can demonstrate awareness, compassion, kindness, and unity. The program peaks yearly at the end of October, coinciding with the date of Jesse’s passing.

Administered by Sport BC, the BC Amateur Sport Fund ("BCASF") is the BC chapter of the Canadian Council of Provincial & Territorial Sport Federations ("CCPTSF"), a Registered Canadian Amateur Athletic Association with charitable status (CRA number 88938 6868 RR0001). The CCPTSF was established in 1980 to benefit amateur sport across Canada by supporting projects like this. The BCASF was previously known as the “National Sport Trust Fund”, or “NSTF”. The Fund changed its name in August 2019 to more accurately reflect its fundraising and granting activities.
