Lisa Kierstead McCully Memorial Bursary!

A tall, beautiful and vivacious child, Lisa found that every day was an adventure. Lisa grew up in Quispamsis, N.B., excelling in swimming, piano, drama, and school leadership. In her High School of 2,000, she was a capable President of the Student Council. 



Her vacations satisfied her joy of travel, and one summer took her to the Dominican Republic to live with a family in the mountains. There she learned a working Spanish, and she shared her room with three children and four pigs.   With her host, she traveled up the mountain for meetings of the coffee growers' union, sparking a life-long interest in distributive justice and fair trade.



She attended Mount Allison from 1989 to 1993, completing a bachelor of arts.  Often her brother Jonathan would show up from U.N.B. and her sister Jenny from Acadia and the three would enjoy a weekend together.  Her language studies took her to Strasbourg, France, for a total immersion year.  She was active in many clubs and was a valued teammate on the rugby pitch and the social activities surrounding the games.  She was well known on campus for her huge smile, goofy sense of humour, and generous spirit. 



After university, Lisa became a teacher and lived in Vancouver and then Toronto.  She eventually moved back east, married and had two wonderful children. She was raising them as a single mother and they enjoyed baking bread, hunting for edible mushrooms, singing together as Lisa played the ukulele, and building a labyrinth on the lawn of their property in Portapique, Nova Scotia.



To her students in Advocate, Masstown, and Debert schools she was an exceptional teacher who loved each individual and worked diligently to equip them to live in this troubled world.


In April 2020 there came a night and day of incomprehensible violence when twenty-two people were murdered, Lisa among them. "Nova Scotian Strong" has become a logo to remind everyone that arms and hearts are open in support of our many families who have been touched by tragedy. 



Lisa will be remembered for her smile, her joy in mothering and teaching, and her strong values. She was known for assuring others: "Let your faith be stronger than your fear."
