Andrew
Andrew was diagnosed at 17 months with a life-threatening disease called Cystinosis. Cystinosis is an ultra-rare metabolic disease that afflicts only 2,000 children and adults around the world. The amino acid known as cystine accumulates and crystallizes in the cells. This build-up eventually destroys every organ. Fortunately, advancements in drugs which slow the progression of Cystinosis are making life easier - but they are not a cure. To combat his condition, Andrew has to take medication every six hours, 24/7 and requires the use of a gastrointestinal tube.
Andrew recently underwent surgery on both of his knees to help straighten his legs; another complication of Cystinosis. He is hoping for a Wish that would put him in London for the filming of Strange Beasts 2
Shelby
At 15 months old, Shelby was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, a condition where her large intestine was being attacked by her immune system. She had to have a life-saving operation at only two years old to have her entire large intestine removed. Shelby now lives with an ileostomy. In addition to the surgery, Shelby was treated with varying medications which caused her to be immunosuppressed, meaning Shelby became sick more often.
Shelby recently took up the ukulele and is also very interested in learning to play the drums, preparing for the day she gets to have her own band. Shelby has yet to choose her Wish. She has a zest for life and is very excited about the many things she would like to experience. Making up her mind has been tough!
Wishes work wonders
There’s big power in a child’s wish
Children’s Wish is a uniquely Canadian charity that helps Canadian children, families and communities by granting the heartfelt wish of children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses including severe genetic and neurological diagnoses. With every wish that we grant, we create moments of joy that ease the pain of a child and gives respite to the child’s family in that special wish of hope. It’s hard to imagine what we would do without the companies, community groups and individuals who support us year after year so we can continue to fulfill the healing hope of every wish child.
3 wishes granted each day, every day of the year
