My Message

Welcome to my fundraising page !

Dear Friends: I welcome you to visit my personal fundraising page for Cuso International to learn more about how you can contribute to my fundraising goal and about my work to help children in Tanzania. http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?SID=3583353&LangPref=en-CA.

As most of you are aware, I am on a two-year assignment in Tanzania with Cuso International as a volunteer advisor working closely with local Tanzanian authorities, communities and UNICEF on implementing a large-scale project to strengthen and expand the country’s national birth registration system. See details below.

A birth certificate, which most of us take for granted, is one of the most important documents a child will ever own. Children in Tanzania, particularly in remote areas, will only exist in the eyes of their national government, and enjoy their fundamental rights, when they are officially registered with a birth certificate.

A birth certificate is an essential passport to ensuring all children can access health care, education and protection throughout their life. In 2011, the births of around 1.4 million Tanzanian children (out of 1.7 million births) were not registered. The Government of Tanzania is fully aware of the social, regional, resource and administrative challenges to maximizing birth registration/certification at this time and is committed to achieving birth registration for all children over the next two years. It is possible.

It is an honour for me to have been selected by Cuso International to support this important initiative and there is much work ahead.

Cuso International is a non-profit, international development agency that works through volunteers. We send people rather than money – we are not an emergency aid agency. Each year, Cuso International places hundreds of North American volunteers with skills, knowledge and experience to collaborate on development projects in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Volunteers come from various fields of expertise, ranging from agriculture to human rights, from community economic development to AIDS prevention, from eco-tourism to technology. Our volunteers work collaboratively with local people to equip them with the skills they need to ensure they can exercise their basic human rights. These include the right to a livelihood, an education, basic healthcare, a safe environment, a say in the future, and equal access to opportunity.

As a charity, Cuso International asks all volunteers to undertake a target of fundraising to help sustain our work in this vital area. I have personally committed to raising $4000 over the next two years, but I will only be able to accomplish this with your help. It is the generosity of everyday people which allows Cuso International to continue having an impact around the globe. For every $1 I raise, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will contribute $9! Tax receipts are available for donations of 10 dollars or more. Thank you for your time and generosity! Over the coming two years, you can follow my updates and progress from the field through my fundraising page above and my personal blog forthcoming (stay tuned for details)!
