My Message

And now Nigeria

You may have followed my adventures in India in 2008/9 when I was volunteering with VSO/CUSO doing strategic planning and helping to make short videos for a World Health Organization maternal and infant mortality mass education campaign.

Despite being a few years older, I still have a strong desire to make a contribution in some way to the continent of my origin. So I am delighted to have been accepted by CUSO International (www.cusointernational.org) to do a three month volunteer placement in Nigeria

From November this year, I will be based in the south-east city of Calabar and be doing stakeholder communications for CUSO's "YouLead" project that helps young people develop entrepreneurial skills and set up micro and medium scale businesses in the Natural Resource sector.  Over 225 youngsters are learning to run aquaculture operations, start poultry farms, etc. You'll be familiar with the quote: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."  What we'll be doing is even better: Teaching young men and women how to farm fish and grow chickens and feed a community into the future.

Work and life experience has its advantages in international development and Cuso recognizes this by sending skilled volunteers rather than aid money. Volunteers work on long-term, sustainable solutions, and live at the heart of the community they serve, on a similar allowance and in comparable accommodation to their local co-workers. The idea is that volunteers will  bring skills and knowledge that is shared and left behind with the local community.

Since Cuso International is a charity, each volunteer is asked to assist in fundraising efforts to   further this work. It costs about $30,000 to send each volunteer and for every $10 donated, the Canadian government contributes $90 more.

To play my part, I would be grateful if friends considered making a donation on my behalf to the worthwhile and urgent work of CUSO.

Last time friends seemed to enjoy the monthly 'Bhuba Babbler" that  kept us connected. So once again, in appreciation of your interest and support, I commit to email you a newsletter from Nigeria.

In this way you can keep track of my experience, and we will both help CUSO in its development work around the world.
