UPDATE Jan 29, 2018

With all your help - we've achieved our goal!

$4,170 translates into $41,700 (including funds provided by the Canadian Government) for Cuso International to continue their work.  This amount, on average, will cover a volunteer placement for well over a year.

Thank you everyone!

UPDATE Jan 28, 2018

Thank you to the latest donors and to everyone that has donated and/or provided encouragement and support.  Really appreciated!

We fly out on Feb 10, 2018.  There are two others from Cuso travelling on the same day to Ethiopia and both will also be based in Asosa.  Once we arrive in Addis Ababa, we'll be provided with further training before we head to our assignments in Asosa.

UPDATE Jan 19, 2018

Thank you to everyone for donating to Cuso International!

Recently got back from Ottawa from the Skills & Knowledge for Working in Development (SKWID) training at Cuso.  The Cuso staff were really helpful and the facilators amazing.

At the end of the 5-day training there was a close bond among the volunteers, who came from many different backgrounds and were heading to many different places around the world, including Northwest Territories, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ethiopia (3 others), Mozambique, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines.

I shared a hotel room with a gentleman - Dez - from Sierra Leone who was heading to Jamaica to work with troubled youth. He also happens to be a DJ! He may refer to the Cuso training in his show this Saturday, Jan 20 at noon (CST), I PM (EST). Try tuning in to UMFM 101.5.

It looks like I'll be flying out in February.

UPDATE Jan 10, 2018

A very BIG thank you to everyone that has donated so far and to those that have provided support and encouragement.  We've met our minimum financial goal of raising $2,000 for CUSO International which translates into an additional $18,000 from the Government.  Shehnaaz and I will continue to match any additional donations dollar for dollar until we've raised a total of $4,000.

Tomorrow I head to CUSO in Ottawa for a 5-day Skills & Knowledge for Working In Development pre-departure training. My tentative arrival date in Ethiopia is Jan 28. There will be on ground training before starting my assignment there.

FIRST POST:

Hi !

I'm excited to let you know that I’ll be volunteering at a hospital in Asosa, Ethiopia through CUSO International. I’ll be helping out with hospital administration, finance and budgeting from late January 2018 for appromiately 7 months.

It's difficult to describe in words what this means for both Shehnaaz (my wife) and I.  We've acquired certain skills and experiences over the years in England and Canada and through CUSO here's a wonderful opportunity to share these things and in return learn about other cultures and peoples in an exciting and vibrant part of the world. Without experiences such as this, we both feel that our lives would be incomplete.  While Shehnaaz is not able to join me on this assignment, she's providing valuable support through her knowledge of healthcare and by keeping things ticking at home (along with our son Imran) while I'm away.

The Canadian Government provides support to CUSO, and in return expects CUSO and its volunteers to make meaningful and sustainable contributions to the local partner organizations as well as raise awareness and funds.  Up to certain limits, the Canadian Government will match nine (9) times the funds raised.  Our financial goal is to raise the minimum of $2,000 (we hope to raise more).   For every donation made, both Shehnaaz and I will match it to a maximum of $2,000 i.e., if we receive total donations of $2,000, we will add another $2,000 for a total of $4,000. We've started by donating the first $1,000. Tax receipts provided in Canada and the US. (For individuals wanting a US tax receipt, the donation must be made via the CUSO website (https://cusointernational.org/donate/). Donating through the link on this page will result in a Canadian tax receipt being issued.)

In addition, for every donation made, I will send a personal postcard from Ethiopia and for every donation of $100 or more, I will bring a locally made artifact for you.  More importantly, I will provide perodic updates to everyone on my activities and stay. Please note that internet access is not widely available so my updates may sometimes be clustered or combined.

I will also update this page with news, photos and videos once I'm in Asosa, so please visit this page when you can.
