My Message

“Why am I rowing in the Million Meter Row?” For me, my reason is simple, my Uncle Martin Stearns.

My Uncle Marty served in Vietnam under the Army’s 1st Cavalry division.

He flew Light Observation & Huey helicopters often drawing fire during combat missions. He was even shot down during one mission, but survived.

He was awarded two Silver Stars & a Bronze Star for his combat service, and came home in 1972 after completing his time in the military.

Post war, he began to pursue a culinary career, however, he had a hard time adjusting to life after the war.

He withdrew from family & friends, having a very difficult time reconciling everything he’d been through during the war.

Even though he’d made it home alive from Vietnam, he ultimately lost his battle.  In October of 1979, he took his own life. I was only six at the time, so I don’t remember him, but it was a traumatic experience for my family. It was hard for them to not feel responsible in some way.

So I’m rowing for my Uncle Marty, and for all veterans whose story ended the way his did, so that our veterans today will have real options to help them transition back to meaningful civilian life after their service. I don’t want any family to have to experience what my family went through.

By rowing in the Million Meter Row and supporting GallantFew, I’m choosing to support veterans with effective mentoring & support to help make a sustained & meaningful transition back to civilian life.

Please help to support our cause!

Our young men & women chose to serve our country and protect the freedoms we’re all able to enjoy. They often times are put in the horrible situations and experience the worst that humanity has to offer. The least we can do is to support those who chose to protect us and serve!
