My Message

Camp Nejeda is a home away from home for children and teens with type 1 diabetes.

I don't think there's any better way for me to sum up what camp means, than the opening line of the first video on this page..."to me, Camp Nejeda is pretty magical".

For 8 years now, I've had the honor and privilege of working with these amazing kids and counselors. I've seen first-hand what camp does for them. Kids who come in not doing any diabetes related care tasks, leave after 1-2 weeks giving their own injections, counting their own carbs, dosing their own insulin. Kids who are afraid of insulin pumps, see 80% of our campers/staff on them and start to ask questions about them and become inspired to want their own. They learn about how to handle low blood sugars, high blood sugars; how to handle school situations and life situations while managing Type 1 diabetes. They learn life skills and management skills. They ask questions they may be too scared or embarrassed to ask their doctors or parents.

But, most importantly, they learn what it means to belong somewhere, to have a family not related to you; what it means to be just like everyone else and fit in. That experience is priceless. It changes them. And it changes all of us who witness it every summer.

It's what keeps me coming back year after year. I believe in Camp's mission and their message. I believe in the work we do here. And I believe in giving back to a place that has given me so much.

Please consider making a donation to this magical place.

Thank you!
