My Message

Why ride? The Bike to the Moon is the PKD Foundation of Canada's newest fundraising event, aiming to raise $30,000 in 2019. With each participant and each kilometre travelled, we will move closer to discovering more treatments and a cure for polycystic kidney disease (PKD). PKD is one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases affecting approximately 66,000 Canadians and 12.5 million people worldwide. It equally affects men, women and children – regardless of age, race, geography or ethnic origin.

The funds raised will directly support critical Canadian PKD research within the Hereditary Kidney Disease Program at Toronto General Hospital led by Dr. York Pei, MSc, MD, FRCPC. With your help, we can look forward to a time when no one will have to suffer the full effects of PKD.

Donate today to help us end PKD and collectively we will bike all the way to the moon to bring us to the ultimate finish line: A cure for PKD!

My Story

Some of you are aware that I am the Calgary Chapter coordinator for the PKD Foundation of Canada . We bring in experts to help educate both friends, family, caregivers and patients about what PKD is and how we can successfully maintain and improve our lifestyles, all while building a supportive community in our city and surrounding areas.

I cherish this role and I hope to only get better at it and have more of a reach in the years to come!

This is incredibly personal for me. Last year my mom was in end stage kidney disease - this meant she needed to be put on dialysis or receive a transplant ASAP in order to survive. I grew up knowing that this was inevitable, but nothing prepares you for the day that it becomes a shocking reality.

My cousin did the unthinkable and stepped up to be a live-donor, and miraculously was a match. In May 2018 my mom SUCCESSFULLY received her new kidney. In January 2019 she had a bi-lateral nephrectomy to remove the two bad kidneys - as they were massively overgrown and still causing pain. This procedure resulted in multiple re-hospitalizations and infections - but in the end, was a success!

I need to point out how incredible my father was - he was there for my mom EVERY step of the way - I couldn't get him to leave her side if I tried.

Also - my cousins wife. I was sick with worry and guilt that they were going through this emotional roller-coaster with us - but also grateful that someone was willing and strong enough to stand by her partner and, together, do what I couldn't do for my mom.

Even though this experience wasn't about me, it was still hard to ignore the fact that this was a terrifying glimpse of my future.

I have a habit of standing on my soap-box of self-sufficiency and ignore the fact that sometimes we actually need people in our lives to support us. It isn't about someone carrying our weight for us - it's about accepting a helping hand and being stronger together than you are alone. This was a huge lesson for me and I'm working on being more graceful and knowing when and how to ask for help if I need it.

To the people that support me on a day to day basis - Thank you and I love you to the moon and back!
