My Message

My OCD journey began in 2013. In one quick moment my life, and the lives of those closest to me changed. I was plagued with intrusive thoughts; persistant, repetitive, unwanted, horrific thoughts and images, and compulsions. This involved reassurance seeking; the excessive need to repetitively ask others for reassurance when ample assurance is evident to others and has already been provided.

OCD is characterized by obsessions and/or compulsions that are time-consuming, distressing, and/or interfere with normal routines, relationships, or daily functioning.

The exact cause of OCD is not known, but it appears to be caused by a combination of psychological, biological, and genetic factors. Research suggests that OCD involves the brain's circuits and problems in communication between the front part of the brain and deeper structures. Experts believe that OCD may be caused in part by neurotransmitters, like serotonin or glutamate, which behave abnormally in certain areas of the brain.

I am excited to be taking part in the 4th annual OCD Walk Toronto in support of the Thompson Anxiety Disorders Centre. The funds raised will support important services that treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Services for OCD can be hard to find which is why the Thompson Centre is such an important resource. The Thompson Centre is the only program in Canada that offers a range of services from individual and group therapy, to psychiatric consultations and care, to residential treatment.

I am walking for myself, all of my family and friends who continue to support me, and for those individuals who are also affected by mental illness.

"One day, you had a thought that didn't seem right to you. It didn't reflect your belief. But it was your thought. Why would you have it without believing it? This disconnect triggered a feeling - not just a mild dissatisfaction but some kind of psychological pain. The more you tried not to think about it, the more the thoughts intruded. You began to see yourself as an imposter. You're not just anxious. There's something sharp jabbing into your mind. But all is not lost. Although your suffering may be great, your ability to change this experience is within your grasp." - The Mindfulness Workbook for OCD
