My Message

Hi everyone!
As most of you know, I am a Registered Nurse at the Hospital for Sick Children, where I work on the Intermediate Care and Respiratory Unit. Every day I work with babies, children and teenagers who ferociously flight their Cystic Fibrosis and don't let their diagnosis define who they are. Unless one of them showed you their feeding tube, or the nasal prongs they wear at night, they can look quite healthy.

This is the third year in a row that I am raising money for CF. Believe it or not, last year, I was writing about how lucky we are that we don't have to wear masks all the time. How things have changed! Many of the transitions that we are going through as a society - physical distancing, 6 feet apart, mask-wearing, close social groups - is the "norm" for those living with Cystic Fibrosis.
Over the last decade, there has been a big improvement in survival rate with CF. In the late 80s, life expectancy was less than 10 years old. Now, someone living with CF can live to 51 years old and beyond!!! With the advancement in technology, we have improved the newborn screening/bloodwork process and can identify CF in babies, starting them on treatment earlier and improving their life span. This also means we are working with parents who are learning how to camouflage enzymes in their child's meals, bribing their kids to do physio and begging the teenagers to take medications and stop kissing their partners who have a cold. Not to mention, the increase in cost for the family.

I have seen patients listed for transplants receive their lungs, I have seen patients contract super germs, and I have seen parents reject donor lungs for their child. Although I have sadly been to funerals and celebrations of life, I have also received pictures from families of graduations from high school and university. I feel so privileged to work with this population and that is why I am passionate about this cause. I get to see first hand where this money goes.

As young professionals, as my friends and family, I encourage you to think about how fortunate you are to be here. To eat pizza and food without thinking about how many enzymes you need to take. To be able to date and fall in love with whoever you want. Especially during this exceptional time, many charities have lost the majority (if not all) of their revenue.
I’m helping those who live with Cystic Fibrosis by helping organize and run the Lawn Summer Nights event. I am part of the organization team looking for donations from local businesses across Toronto, organizing the actual event day, as well as a participant. We will be working with hundreds of young professionals in Toronto, and thousands across the country, to raise awareness and funds to help those living with Cystic Fibrosis in Canada. Cystic fibrosis is the number one fatal genetic disease for Canadian children. There is currently no cure ... we want to change that.
Any amount of donation is welcomed. I appreciate it so much, and I know the kids appreciate it even more! I even challenge you to forgo your Starbucks coffee for a couple of days this week and donate that $5 to this amazing cause.
100% of the money raised for Lawn Summer Nights goes directly to initiatives at CF Canada to fund research, advocacy, and provide supplementary support for CF treatment programs at Canadian CF clinics and transplant centres across the country.
