Why I’m doing this

I’ve seen first-hand how cancer can affect someone’s life, and everyone who knows them.  Both my father-in-law and a close personal friend have received cancer treatment at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.  Cancer doesn’t discriminate - anyone can get this disease.  As a husband and proud father of 3 boys between the ages of 6 and 11, I want to do what I can to help the next person diagnosed with cancer.  Please join me in helping to support Grand River Regional Cancer Centre by making a donation to the Grand River Hospital Foundation.

My Journey from Desk Jockey to Triathlete

In January 2018, I started running regularly for the first time since becoming a father.  With my oldest being 10 years old at the time, and my 40th birthday just around the corner, I figured it was time for me to take my personal fitness a little more seriously.  So, I joined the couch-to-5K club at Manulife, and competed in my first 5 km race in May of last year.  A couple weeks later, I competed in the Baden duathlon, which was my first multi-sport event - a 5 km run, followed by a 26 km bike, then another 5 km run.  I really liked the atmosphere - athletes were cheering each other on mid-race!

I was hooked.  So, I set my sights on training for my first triathlon in 2019 - the Muskoka Ironman 70.3.  This event consists of a 1.2 mile open water swim in Fairy Lake, followed by a 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile half-marathon run for a total distance of 70.3 miles (113.1 km).  Also known as a Half Ironman, this event takes professional triathletes somewhere around 4 hours to complete, and the average finishing time for my age group last year was nearly 6 hours.  One way or another, this is going to be an adventure!

I had taken swimming lessons as a kid, but I never swam competitively.  So, last September, I joined the Region of Waterloo (ROW) masters swim club to get the coaching and advice I knew I needed to prepare for this event.  My first practice with them was a real wake-up call.  I learned that if I wanted to make it back to shore in the race, I would need a lot of practice to become a much stronger swimmer.  I really can’t thank the ROW coaches and team enough for the advice and support they’ve given me over the past several months.

Since January, I’ve stepped-up my training to include 8-11 hours of training per week across all three disciplines.  That’s about average for most age group triathletes, but it’s definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone.  However, my family, friends and coworkers have been very supportive and encouraging.  As the race approaches, the reality of this challenge is setting-in, but I’m also becoming more confident in my ability to achieve my goal.
