My Message:

The world seems to be getting smaller and smaller as technology and globalization bring us closer together. This phenomenon is solidifying my belief that we are all one, living un-separated on this not-so-lonely planet. Volunteering overseas isn’t about “helping people over there.” It’s about helping people in general. What’s most important is not where you serve or whom you serve, but how you serve. And how you serve comes from your heart.
I am honored and proud to volunteer with an organization like CUSO-VSO. From the very moment I started my application process, I knew this branch of the international non-profit VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) was one of a kind. I have been treated with appreciation, dignity, and enthusiasm from the very start and this is exactly how they approach their vision of ending poverty. Working collaboratively toward this goal is a dream come true.
I have the privilege of working at the Kwara State College of Education in Nigeria to collaborate with local teachers to improve basic education for preschool and primary aged children. This will involve utilizing my Montessori skills by training teachers in child-centered methodologies and curricular development. I will also take part in working to promote the inclusion of girls and disadvantaged children within the current education system. Could a job be any more rewarding than that?
CUSO-VSO is a nonprofit that strives hard to provide places like the Kwara State College of Education with skilled volunteers. Unfortunately, it costs quite a pretty penny to send even just one volunteer abroad for two years (think tens of thousands of dollars). I’d like to help give back to CUSO-VSO so that they can continue their important and world-changing work by having the funds necessary to recruit and train their volunteers. Therefore, my goal is to raise $3000 during my two year stint abroad. I’m not going to tell you that every dollar you donate will bring CUSO-VSO that much closer to saving the world, one volunteer at a time. But I will tell you that --- Oh, what the heck! Yes I will! Every dollar you donate WILL bring CUSO-VSO that much closer to saving the world! And I promise, if I make it to my goal of $3000, I will come up with some really fancy surprise for each and every one of my donors. Aren’t you intrigued? Thank you so much for your support.

Hi Julie, I'm a friend of your mom and Sara Ware. I'm reading your blog, and you're saying so many of my thoughts (more eloquently than I ever can). My husb and I have a strong interest in international development, and my focus is on girl's education. We can make such a positive difference. I look forward to seeing your blog - soldier on!
