My Message

In February 2012 I departed for Asaita, Ethiopia for a year-long volunteer placement training teachers. The placement is under the aegis of a Canadian non-profit organisation known as Cuso International. Our high school economics class went on a field trip to Ottawa when I was in grade 11. We visited the Canadian Foreign Service Institute. The class received great access because our teacher’s father was a rotating member of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In fact, he had served as Canada’s Ambassador to Austria and Israel and gave a memorable presentation about the activities of a Canadian diplomat. Part of the presentation to our economics class was about the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and its activities in developing countries. The presentation ignited my desire to go and work in an international development setting. It was an inspiring talk, and my journey to Ethiopia feels like the completion of a full circle because Cuso International receives generous funding from CIDA. Cuso International has private donations which are leveraged at a ratio of 9:1 by CIDA. That means every $100 donated by private individuals becomes $1000 in Cuso International’s budget. This helps to fund the $25 000 that it takes to keep one volunteer overseas for a year. CIDA’s caveat to the funding is that Cuso International demonstrates its relevance to ordinary people by raising funds in the form of private donations. I feel like I have been heading towards work in a developing country for a long time. When I was accepted to teacher’s college the plan was to accumulate the necessary experience so that I would be able to engage in the type of work that Cuso International does. Part of that work is fundraising. I have set a personal fundraising goal of $2000. I figure that if I were running for political office that I would be trying to raise funds also, and I at least believe in this cause. So I seek your support in raising funds for Cuso International. In Ethiopia I will work at the Asaita College of Teacher Education as a teacher trainer. It feels like a culminating phase of a long journey. After living abroad for more than ten years, practising my teaching and acquiring the necessary qualifications I am ready for what I anticipate will be the great challenge of my life. The challenge will be to leave a positive impact on the world. We all have a limited time on this planet. I would like to use some of mine to build capacity in the Ethiopian education system. I hope that I can share my teaching knowledge and ideas with my Ethiopian colleagues and build a better Ethiopia and a better world.
