On October 15, 2015 Ed Flood lost his four year battle with ALS

An explorer, a pioneer, an adventurer, an outdoorsman, a mountaineer, a sports enthusiast, an inspiration, a mentor, a colleague, a friend, a cycling buddy, a ski buddy, a writer, a geologist, a mining executive, a husband and father ... he lived life to the fullest.

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), commonly know as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a fatal, rapidly progressing neuromuscular disease. It can strike anyone, at any age. As motor neuron cells die the brain loses its ability to initiate and control muscle movements, leading to total paralysis. Life expectancy is between 3 and 5 years. There is NO cure and NO effective treatment today.

Ed knew that the human experience was akin to searching the earth for minerals. He said, “Most great discoveries have to climb a wall of worry and disbelief." He believed that through collaboration and determination good things come to fruition.

Ed’s wishes were that the medical research of Dr. Neil Cashman, neuroscientist at the Brain Research Centre UBC, and Director of the Vancouver ALS Clinic, be supported.

Dr. Cashman is a world leader in research and clinical activities pertaining to neurodegenerative disease. A pioneer in this field, his work has transformed the research landscape in Canada, leading to the generation of several policy and research networks, including the Network Centre of Excellence called PrioNet Canada. Finding a treatment for ALS has been Dr. Cashman's mission and has led to the development of a potential vaccine for ALS and related diseases Alzheimers and Parkinsons.

Dr. Cashman, like Ed, believes that collaboration leads to discovery.

Remembering Ed Flood. Please give and make a difference for the future of those suffering from ALS.

Despite his success, Ed was one of the most down to earth people with time for anyone that I knew. SHe lived a great and fulfilling life. I will miss him and my deep sympathy for your loss.
