My Message

My name is Kellen Hassell and I am a parent of an Angel. In 2012, 8-years into a decade of professional neurodevelopmental disability services work, my wife Maria and I had our middle-son, Luciano (“Luc” / "Luke"), who was born with Angelman Syndrome (deletion ).

Luc is sandwiched in between our oldest daughter Leila (almost 7) and our 2-year-old boy Adrian. The strength & ability to be a good dad to Luc-- with all his complex needs, challenges, and medical fragility --& also to Leila and Adrian, has come, in part, from learning to really love every fun, euphoric, ecstatic, painful, monotonous, excruciating, & spirit-crushing experience to be had while riding a bicycle over exceptionally long distances as fast as I can....

Cycling was something that I've always loved, but became essential & indispensable to my survival since Luc's birth, subsequent diagnosis, and these 4 & 1/2years of his life.

Starting on July 31st through August 6th, I will ride my bicycle ~1,000 miles from Miami, FL up to the University of North Carolina at Chapel HIll, NC... where there is not only one of the very first interdisciplinary health clinics designed to diagnose & treat Angelman Syndrome and support parents and families who have a loved-one with the condition, but also where some of the most promising cure research is being conducted by Dr. Ben Philpot and his team.

On July 31, 2016, I will be embarking on the biggest physical challenge I've ever undertaken. It is likely to hurt and test my limits. But, in truth nothing hurts as much as being Luc's dad at times, and nothing feels better than watching and helping achieve his own personal milestones.

Please give generously and make an impact for our children's future -- for Luciano's future. All monies raised will go to Angelman Syndrome Foundation, as all logistics for the execution of the ride itself are exclusively self-supported. You give, and that money goes directly to help Luc and his fellow Angels in our search for a cure.

Thank you for your support!

-Kellen

Update: August 2nd, 2016

Angelman Syndrome & Cycling

I started riding a bike and training alone. What I’ve learned in this last year…. Both with cycling, and in being the best Dad I can be to Luc, and to Leila, and to Adrian is that none of it is ever done alone. It takes an absolute army to drive change… in ourselves & the world.

60 of you came together this past Sunday and just floored me. Everyone’s support, heart, dedication, contributions, & enthusiasm continues to amaze and leaving me feeling exceptionally fortunate and humbled on this adventure. It’s a privilege to be able to do this ride for Luc, for all people with Angelman Syndrome, for Leila, for Adrian, for Maria, and for each of you who have lent of yourselves to help make this happen. You rode with smiles & heart & purpose. You layered meaning onto fun and made this a reality…. And are the reason this has all actually WORKED, done what I dreamed it would do, and has not and will not happen in vain. It, we, you, have made a difference. We are closing in on $15,000. We've had a TV spot, another on the way, countless shares, and you all have spread awareness about the condition in a way that I only fantasized this would all play out. I felt scared to have any expectations for how this would go, for fear of being disappointed. And now, the depth of the impact your contributions as people has made?? It's nearly immeasurable… That’s a gift.

I told Maria & my parents (Bonnie & Kipp) that I wanted to do this ride over a year ago. At first they indulged in the pipedream… And, then…. They actually supported me in very real and tangible ways; making enumerable sacrifices and doing their own work, so that I could get ready to at least try to succeed right now. Maria has put-up w/ my obsessive and ‘hangry’ ass for nearly a year en route to these 7-days…. always being my lighthouse point, and my source of passion & strength, ….recognizing the work, and beaming w/ pride at the accomplishments to date. She’d be here now if she could be, but…. It takes an army. She has balanced unconditional love with perspective & focus…. Stretching me out, so that my head can float in the clouds, while my feet are planted on the ground…. That’s a gift.

To connect with you all, Eve Mart & Lily Medina welcomed me into a cycling community that I really never knew even existed. An entire world where it really is all. about. the. bike. [anyone who says otherwise, is obviously, well, you know….Rule #4]. I was befriended by two amazing people & riders who coached, and pushed, and pulled me. They got me ready on the bike, prepared my body, and straightened out my head. They put up w/ my idiosyncrasies, my overreactions, my stubbornness, my tendency to get down & stay there. Being flexible, patient, and helping me rebound. They ushered me all the way to Cape Canaveral, & they’d be here now if they could be…. But, it takes an army. Frank Vega & Juan Vargas drove me to be better on the bike and as person, while never making me feel like I wasn’t good enough to begin with…. That’s a gift.

I tell my senior students if they want to inspire change, They’re best to try to do it via something they love. Anything. I say, “Your passion will inspire the passion in others… then, you just have to find a way to make it all ‘make sense,’ …like your passion and your cause were meant to go together all along. “Well, with cycling and Angelman Syndrome, it’s rather simple really… “Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” Many of us feel ‘off’ without riding, and so, so right when it’s on & done. “Smiling is a curve that sets everything straight.” Luc’s smile & his laughter are corrections to any of a day’s worth of wrongs. For both, there is meaning, significance, joy & suffering, in the seemingly aimless journey that is both “just riding a bike” & being a parent to a child with a severe disability. You push and push, and you crack. Then you get up and do it again; making the somewhat uncomfortable pleasurable, and the excruciating tolerable.

We measure progress in cycling in very very small steps… improvements that are often invisible to others outside of ourselves or our immediate circle. We do the same with Luc. We live & love the work, eat-up the details of the process, the experience of being & being together. There is always somebody faster…. On the bike and off it. I spent nearly a decade in professional service of people with severe disabilities… the last six of those years were dedicated to people arguably much ‘worse off’ than Luc. We always have it better than some, and someone is always still ‘faster’ than us. So, either way, we just ride…. We know that this is our path, the hand that’s been dealt, and we can ride ourselves out of pretty much anything as long as we just keep pedaling. Maria & I know that, our family & loved ones know that, and cyclists know that. See? ……. Simple ;)

I would never exchange Luc for anyone else’s nondisabled child. He has made me, Maria, his siblings, his grandparents (my mom- Bonnie Henry & dad- Kipp Hassell; Sofia Gaviria; Maria Clara Gaviria; & Edgard Moncayo)… all of us, better, more appreciative, reflective, and patient, empathic people. But, I do look back in sadness at the child he might have been. Angelman Syndrome is not a gift. But, Luc – his person, his soul – still is. Funny how that works, but, it can be, and it HAS to be both. We have to remember to honor both sides.

Bad days on the bike are still days on the bike. It’s where the true breakthroughs really happen. It’s where we emerge better the next time. Bad days as a parent to a child with a severe disability are still days as a parent loving their child. It’s where we emerge better the next time. In cycling it’s, “I love cycling. And, everything hurts & I’m dying.” // With Luc it’s, “I love my son more than anything. And, everything hurts & I’m dying.”

And, so, we just pedal. A very wise, cranky, inspirational, and true HardMan mentor of mine once said, "You can stand almost anything if you know when it's going to end." How many more miles?! I want to find a cure. And, I don't honestly know if that search will end. But, I know my time as Luc's dad eventually will... and I know I can do more than just stand it until that time comes.

Dear Dr. Hassell, I'm incredibly honored to be one of your students (more than once). Beyond all the clinical knowledge you share with us, your students, it is your love and passion that inspire us all. As a parent, I can only imagine what you go through and as a healthcare professional, I can only encourage you to keep fighting. This is for Luke! DON'T STOP until you find the cure!

August 3rd. I was in Midway, Ga this morning on my way to Richmond Hill past I95. I saw you and your support vehicle. We stopped at the traffic signal together and waved. I looked to see what you were riding for. I had never heard of Angelman so I googled it and found this and realized I had seen you heading to Savannah. I will certainly be lifting you up in prayer as you travel. Also, for your precious child and a cure for this awful disease. God bless.
