My Message

VHL or von Hippel-Lindau Syndrome is a rare genetic disease and cancer syndrome. Over 900 (1/36,000) VHL patients are in Canada.

I've had 5 brain tumour (hemangioblastomas) and 4 kidney cancer (RCC) operations in my life. I was diagnosed with VHL when I was 15; now I'm 47. It's had a very significant impact on me. It's been tough, but it has also made me stronger and more grounded. I still managed to get a Master's degree and a fulfilling professional career (relatively short due to my VHL-related problems).

Most of my life I never knew anyone else with this disease even though I lived in one of the largest cities and went to major teaching hospitals. But a few years ago, I met and talked to many in my city and the rest of the country! I was so inspired by all the stories that I heard. These were "my people"!

In 2016, I started a charity called "VHL Canada" to fill a gap in order to reach out to VHL patients and their family members in Canada. I had already started to learn a lot about the cause through volunteering with other groups, but I knew I had to take it further and be more proactive.

Our mission is to improve the lives of those affected by VHL in Canada. Imagine living your life knowing that tumours, benign or malignant, are inevitable and may cause dangerous problems, but not knowing when or where.

Your generosity will directly support Group/Individual, Outreach/Advocacy, and Wellness/Training programs in our vast country. All of our volunteers devote as much as 900 hours towards Support and other services per year. We are cost-efficient. We are volunteer-run. We pay no salaries, just out-of-pocket expenses.

You'll receive an official income tax receipt as we are a registered charity with CRA
