Welcome to My Personal Page

Although this year is a “Ninth Journey to Remember,” how many times a year, or a month, or sometimes even a week do so many who knew my brother travel back to 2009? Myself, the rest of my family and extended family, co-workers who spent long hours with him, the circle of friends he treasured, the acquaintances whose paths crossed his…I cannot imagine what the number would be if we counted the times he crossed our minds or his absence was felt in our hearts over the past year.

March 21, 2018, is the 9th anniversary of my brother, Sgt. Dan Sakai, and 3 other Oakland Police Department officers, Sgt. Erv Romans, Sgt. Mark Dunakin, and Ofc. John Hege, being killed in the line of duty. These men were fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, mentors, friends, and so much more. In their memory, and the memory of all law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, I ride my bike in the Police Unity Tour.

I ride to honor and remember not only these 4 OPD officers but also the 128 officers killed in the line of duty in 2017.  It is heartbreaking to know so many more people this past year now live with the pain of missing their officer for the rest of their lives.

I ride to honor and remember those who knew these officers - too many lives turned upside down and sideways and changed forever.

I ride to honor and remember my brother, Daniel T. Sakai. I know many of you have read this part of the story before, but I love the connection we had through cycling…  In high school, Dan and I worked at a mountain bike shop together. We overlapped 2 semesters at UC Berkeley and spent a lot of time together riding our bikes. We'd go up into the Berkeley hills, down to the flats to window shop at REI and the North Face outlet, or out to the Emeryville Marina and sit and talk. Growing up in Big Bear we were siblings, but during our time together at Cal we became friends, and we did this through riding - this is why doing the Tour is my special way of honoring and remembering Dan.

Over 4 days, I will ride approximately 250 miles, starting in New Jersey on May 9 and ending at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, on May 12.

The primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have been killed in the line of duty; the secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum. Both purposes resonate strongly with me. Even though my brother was a cop, I had no idea how many officers were killed each year – until it happened to him.  And I never imagined his name would be engraved on a granite wall in Washington, DC, but it is – and I continue riding to help ensure the Memorial is maintained so that families, co-workers, and friends of fallen officers may find some solace there.

Although we haven't met in person, I am honored to be one of your FB Buds. My husband, Rod, worked for Richmond PD for 30 years so we both understand the ultimate sacrifice your family paid to protect us. We're glad we can help a little -- God bless <3<3<3
