Dear friends,

Friends…if you're reading this I hope it inspires you!

Here's my story, I hope it speaks to you, motivates you and moves you to move with me!

For the past few years, I have been struggling to try and get my health and fitness on track.  A primarily sedentary lifestyle, sitting at a desk all day and not much physical activity outside of work have negatively impacted my overall health. Every morning I wake up and stare into several pill bottles for medications to help reduce my cholesterol, high blood pressure etc.  My doctor has been patient. We've had the same conversation many times over the last year and a half, where he encourages me to eat better and get active. I get things together for a while, and then eventually fall off the rails (burgers are awesome you know!).  It became clear that I wasn't going to make this happen by myself, so I decided to look for help, and surround myself with active people and a new environment.

I got involved with YMCA Northumberland’s Funds Development Committee. During my involvement with the committee, I met some incredible people and saw an opportunity with the Turkey Trot event. This event encourages people to get outdoors, and not only to get moving but to bring their whole family along, and it's a ton of fun. It's the perfect opportunity to set a goal, work towards it and begin to create some new healthy habits, and all money raised will go directly to the YMCA Annual Strong Kids Campaign, helping remove barriers to vital services and programs for everyone in our communities.

Here's where you come in.

I am at the beginning of my fitness journey, but I am stepping out of my comfort zone in hopes that I can inspire others like me to get off the couch and take the first step towards better health.

Can you help me encourage first-timers to get up, get out, and join me at this year's Turkey Trot?

On October 9th, I will complete the Turkey Trot. I've set a goal to complete the race without walking. Not only will I complete the race, but I have committed to follow the coaching and advice of Rod Simpson and Mette Aarlev to prepare for the event.

The YMCA is about community, and I have found a whole community of support there including running coaches, yoga instructors, and a very motivating turkey. Follow my training progress as I run, lift, swim, squat, cycle towards my goal. This means staying committed and focused on the bigger picture of a healthier life, and I hope this might inspire you or others in our community to get up and get moving.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Give back to the community by donating to my page. The money will go directly to the YMCA Annual Strong Kids Campaign and contribute to Building Strong Kids, Strong Families and Strong Communities.

2. Join me on October 9th and participate in the Turkey Trot. There is something for everyone, regardless of your age or ability. You can register by visiting http://northumberlandforestturkeytrot.org/ (copy the URL into your browser)

Thank you for supporting my campaign. Every gift makes a difference.
