My Message

It's cold out there.
Like, sometimes colder than the Arctic and the Antarctic. We don't have enough beds in shelters to accommodate the numbers of people without housing. Aside from available beds, there are myriad reasons people choose not to access shelters. Stories I've heard are all rock and hard place situations: I'm clean and want to stay clean and I know drug/alcohol X is there; someone wants to jump me; I can't take my dog who is my only friend in the world; they'll won't let my kids if they know I don't have a place. The stories I've heard are as varied and unique as the people who've shared them with me.

Bissell Centre offers warm meals, warm clothing, and assistance in getting housing through collaboration with other organizations offering supports to under-resourced people.

As a white person who, because of the workings of systemic marginalization, am dramatically less likely to face a situation of no housing, it is my job to use the privilege that comes with that to do what I can. Indigenous peoples, people of colour, trans people, and young LGBTQ people make up a disproportionate number of people with housing, people freezing (to death, all too often) as well as being hit with discrimination and abuse in trying to simply exist in daily life.

I am walking to raise money so Bissell can provide services. I am walking so people in my circles who aren't already, become aware of issues facing unhoused peoples. Most of all, I want to help bring visibility to the crisis of insufficient housing and insufficient resources, generally, in our city. Charities and non-profit organizations can only do so much. We, people with enough privilege to be housed, to have access to the internet in order to read this, can make change through small steps, like participating and donating. We can make change through small steps like voting for politicians who are committed to dismantling systemic discrimination and supporting long term solutions for housing.

Please join our team! If you can't join us, please donate! No amount is too small (nor too big!) and it's a small step you can take to help.

Thank you!

The official statement as well, because it's good:

And on February 22, I'm going to do something about it. Together with thousands of Canadians across the country, I'll be walking and fundraising to support hungry, homeless, and hurting people and families in my community. Please, give generously by clicking the "Donate Now" button above. Thanks!
