My Message

This September/October, I am participating in the Ride for Refuge in support of Journey Home Community.

The Ride is a fundraiser that supports hundreds of charities across Canada who in turn support thousands more displaced, vulnerable, or exploited people - refugees, orphans, widows, at-risk-youth, homeless victims or survivors of human trafficking - you get the picture.

Normally, the Ride for Refuge is a large, energetic event. Last year, more than 800 riders and walkers gathered in Richmond, BC. This year, we are keeping things small, safe and socially distanced.

Journey Home Community's mission is, Inspired by God's love, we are creating caring communities that offer refugee claimants housing, settlement support, and opportunities for connection. Check out Journey Home Community's webpage here:

Did you know that there are 30 million refugees and asylum seekers worldwide? My team, Give me 30 for JHC, plans to raise funds and create awareness about the needs of refugees by walking 30 km - 1 km for each of the 30 million refugees and asylum seekers worldwide.

Personally, I hope to do more than 30 km. So far, I've walked 33.49 km and I hope to get to 60 km by October 3. It's not much, but as I walk it reminds me of the long roads refugees walk to find safety.

Here's some information about the good work Journey Home does in the community...

In 2019, more than 64,000 asylum seekers arrived in Canada looking for refuge. Many of these arrived homeless, disconnected, traumatized, and impoverished. Journey Home is uniquely equipped to welcome those with nowhere to go. We are an inclusive, welcoming community. Refugees are greeted with warm smiles, a furnished apartment, food, help with their refugee claim, and an offer of friendship. To pull this off, Journey Home needs the help of the community and the Ride for Refuge is a great way to get involved.

Since the pandemic shutdown in March, Journey Home provided 17 families with a place to stay. That allowed people who were in shelters or who were experiencing housing insecurity a safe place to live, to socially distance, and to begin making a life for themselves in Canada.

In these uncertain economic times, funds are desperately needed to continue offering services that meet the needs of newly arriving and homeless refugee claimant families. Journey Home is hoping to raise $110,000 - would you help us out?

Thanks for supporting me! #ride20
