My Message

When I was in sixth grade I was given an assigment to write about anything I wanted and it would have to be presented to the whole class as a speech. Most kids wrote about animals, family vacations or what they wanted to be when they grew up. I thought nothing when I wrote my speech about homelessness, I mean what would an 11 year old living in a half descent suburb know about this topic. The idea came from listening to Phil Collins song Another Day in Paradise, which brought attention to the social cause of kids living on the street. At the time, I never made the connection of why the song struck such a chord with me, but as an adult looking back on this I find it all very interesting. I ended up being chosen to say my speech in front of the entire school!

When I just just two years old, my mom sister and I found ourselves with no home of our own after leaving my abusive father. We ended up in Toronto in shelters and living off the kindness of strangers until we secured an apartment. When I wrote that speech I'm not sure I even had the capacity to understand what I had been through myself, but it came from a genuine concern and care that I didn't like the thought that I had a warm place to sleep, while someone else did not. I just wanted people to know it was happening and that it wasn't ok and that we had to do anything we could to change it.

This year has been the worse year I have ever seen for people experiencing homelessness. I work downtown and every morning before I start I watch several people pack up their cardboard and sleeping bag to leave the areas of the building I work which blocks them from the wind. There was a housing crisis before the pandemic and now as people in many sectors have lost their jobs, there are so many more types of demographics and situations than I have ever seen on the street. The need is greater than ever.

God says we must have childlike faith. So, just like my 11 year old self, who stood in front of her whole school thinking that her words would make a difference, I stand before you 30 years later asking to give what you can and to do what you can to help those in need.

Thank you!

It's cold out there. And on February 20, I'm going to do something about it. Together with thousands of Canadians across the country, I'll be walking and fundraising to support people and families experiencing homelessness, hurt, and hunger in my community. Please, give generously by clicking the "Donate Now" button above".
