My Message

Hi:  Here's something I am doing in a few weeks.

On October 2, I'm fundraising in the Ride for Refuge, a cycling and walking fundraiser supporting charities that help people who are displaced and vulnerable.  I'll be walking for Pictou County Safe Harbour, a community-based sponsorship group.(information below).

I know this group's success, and I know whatever you can donate it will make a difference in people's lives.

I hope you will support me as I fundraise for this great cause.  If you can, please give online with a credit card or Paypal at the link below (and get an instant tax receipt).  If you prefer to give by cash or cheque, please get in touch with me.

By participating in the RIDE, I'm speaking for people who have little or no voice and who often get left behind or ignored. And by fundraising, I'm supporting a charity who is bringing hope and refuge to those same people. Thanks for supporting me! #ride21

Many thanks!

Who is Pictou County Safe Harbour?

Pictou County Safe Harbour (PCSH) was founded in 2015 in response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis that was widely publicized in the fall of 2015 after the death of Alan Kurdi. PCSH was established as a community-based sponsorship group, joining Canada’s long tradition of private refugee sponsorship by local citizens, beginning with the Vietnamese Boat People in the late 1970s. Canada’s refugee sponsorship program relies on community groups and volunteers to welcome newcomers to their community, providing one year of financial and emotional supports for the family as they settle into their new lives. While non-religious as a separate entity, Safe Harbour established a close working partnership with Trinity United Church to submit a sponsorship application for one Syrian family. This family arrived in the winter of 2016.

Pictou County Safe Harbour has continued to actively sponsor, welcome and support additional newcomer families since that time with the help of a dedicated volunteer network. Since 2016, Safe Harbour has sponsored 11 refugee families made up of over 50 individuals. The sponsored families come from both Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These families have truly changed the face of our community. The families are settled and are thriving. Many of them have become your neighbours, co-workers and friends. They have made our community a better, more diverse place to live and call home. It is our hope to continue to sponsor refugee families who are in need of a Safe Harbour.

Safe Harbour’s success is due to the efforts and goodwill of dozens of dedicated volunteers and community members.
