My Message

It's cold out there. And on February 26, I'm going to do something about it. Together with thousands of Canadians across the country, I'll be walking and fundraising to support people and families experiencing homelessness, hurt, and hunger in my community.

This event and its title have a special meaning for my family and me! On Tuesday January 13, 2015 my brother “Grant Leonard Faulkner” died in a horrific fire that started in a make shift shelter in an industrial area of Scarborough Ontario near the McCowan Rd.-Nugget Ave..  He felt he had nowhere else to go and a homeless friend of his offered him his make shift plywood shelter to sleep. This was one of the coldest nights that year!!

He was the fourth homeless person to die in the Toronto area that year and his death sparked a media storm that brought attention to the problems and the urgent needs of the homeless. The mayor of Toronto spoke about the problem and the Rev. Dr. John Stephenson, who knew Grant personal and who works tirelessly on behalf of the homeless in the Scarborough area held a beautiful memorial service for Grant at his funeral, which was also cover by the local media stations.

In a letter, I received that year from the Rev. J Stephenson informed me of a memorial service that was conducted by grant’s friends at the site of his passing and that “his death proved to be a significant catalyst in getting a number of homeless people off the streets into safe accommodations.”
Our family is very happy that Grant’s passing has inspire people to respond to this problem, but despite all this mostly I miss my little brother and am deeply grieved to know I will not see his smiling face again in this world.
