It's cold out there. And on February 26, I'm going to do something about it. Together with thousands of Canadians across the country, I'll be walking and fundraising to support people and families experiencing homelessness, hurt, and hunger in my community.
I have become more and more concerned about the lack of shelter and support for the disadvantaged in our community, especially during Covid. As a Hospice Volunteer, I was thrilled to tour the state of the art Hospice House which this community through the drive and support of many volunteers and community businesses brought to fruition 2 years ago.
Along with the joy of seeing a place so much needed by our community and ailing, bulging hospital, I was only too aware that a mere block away as the crow flies was a designated piece of land for a homeless shelter. It is still not built. If we as a community along with government and Island Health put as much money and support into a ‘state of the art’ homeless shelter as we did for the Hospice house we would be able to provide decent shelter and support of most of the homeless population of Duncan. We have the potential to become a little Finland where no person goes without shelter.
