Since 1991, our Mauno Kaihla Koti Long-term Care Home (MKK LTCH) has been providing the highest quality of care to seniors in and beyond the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District. For approx. the past eight years, the OFRA Foundation and Ladies’ Auxiliary have been fundraising to support the building of a new LTCH that doubles the current capacity and offers a Better than Basic home for the aging population. In summer of 2023, after many laborious years of planning and yearning, the project went to tender for bids to bring the dream to fruition.

Bids for a new 128-bed LTCH came in two times more costly than anticipated. Unreasonable, unrealistic, and impossible. Since then, the OFRA and Foundation have remained firm that the dreams of a New MKK are still very much alive and are dedicated to providing the best Homes with a Heart it can offer. In the meantime, the current MKK needs a few upgrades that will be moved to the new home in the future (saving in future costs)!

This year’s Grand Parade goal is $75,000 to support the purchasing of new dining room chairs and common area furnishings! These upgrades are needed now as the furnishings are old, rundown, and not the right materials when it comes to infection control and sanitizing capabilities. Additionally, a great feature will be added to some dining room chairs that enables a seated resident to be slid under a table without being jostled and the staff member straining themselves!

Out with the old, in with the new! We’ll be creating a cleaner, more cohesive and attractive home for our community’s seniors and loved ones.
