It's cold out there. During the last few weeks of our coldsnap, I've been on the frontlines helping provide essential warming resources for our unhoused neighbours in the Downtown Eastside. I have seen firsthand the impact of what a pair of gloves, scarves, toques, blankets, coats, socks, and underwear can do to keep people warm, safe, dry and alive. Our first priority must ALWAYS be to save lives.
.
Yet, in recent news there have been so many threats against the DTES that are more to do with how we respond to homelessness rather than questioning why there is homelessness. So it feels very timely right now for our annual fundraiser Coldest Night to raise awareness about homelessness and poverty. We have only a few days left to go in our advocacy and fundraising campaign for our unhoused neighbours in the DTES.
.
So on February 22 let's do something about it. Together with thousands of Canadians across the country, I'll be walking and fundraising to support community members in the DTES. Proceeds go to First United and our frontline work. You can participate by walking or clicking "Donate Now" button above.
.
I have to say: since I've been personally doing more and more frontline and outreach work over the last few years, I constantly witness the impact a pair of gloves can make on someone's health, comfort and helping to reinforce they know they matter.
