My Message

Dear Family and Friends,

I want to take a moment to share my heartfelt gratitude for visiting this page. The Coldest Night of the Year event holds special significance as it aims to support local non-profit organizations like the Nest Community Homeless Shelter in Michigan City, Indiana. I will be participating in the 5K walk, a personal endeavor that honors the guests I work with every day as a case manager at Nest Shelter.

My community is incredibly important to me, and assisting our guests in their journeys towards self-sufficiency and finding their forever homes is both challenging and profoundly rewarding. Since 2018, I've been dedicated to supporting the homeless population, and each day serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of those I meet.

As I walk, I carry the memories of those we have lost to homelessness in my heart. I invite you to consider making a donation to help us continue growing and nurturing our shelter's programs. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of many.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Warmly,  Abigail Rae Stewart

D. was an older gentleman who found joy amidst life's challenges. He was one of the first guests I met six years ago, sharing captivating stories from the "Good Ole Days." Despite his struggles and the loss of his family, his resilient spirit shines brightly. When he passed away, it was comforting to know he found peace.

As December ends, M. will celebrate his first year in a forever home after years of chronic homelessness. When asked what he wanted, he’d simply say, “I have a book in my hand and coffee next to me. What more can I want?” His resilience, laughter, and openness to support inspire me, and I’m grateful to have witnessed his journey.

I met T in 2018, and her joyful spirit despite the challenges of homelessness inspired everyone around her. She faced many obstacles but always found a way to overcome them, eventually finding her forever home with community support. Her passing from cancer a year ago deeply affected me, and her memory continues to resonate with me. This February, I will honor her spirit as I walk on the coldest night of the year. Your support will help make a lasting impact on those in need this season.
