It's cold out there. For someone with a mental illness, it may feel cold in their inner world almost all the time. I have posted a picture of my son Luke. This was at his 30th birthday. It “should have” been a happy time with KFC chicken, birthday cake and presents. But, partway through, Luke’s mood shifted. This happened often as one of the symptoms of his mental illness. He tried hard to stay pleasant but he needed to leave very quickly.
The next year, he was too scared to come out of his hotel room to celebrate. The year after, on his final birthday, he was in the psych ward. When he was released, he had no support. He died soon after from fentanyl poisoning.
In my view, AWAC understands the interaction between mental illness, drug addiction, and homelessness. They intervene without judgement.
Could Luke have been helped if he had support from AWAC?
This is why I fundraise for AWAC by walking in CNOY each year. Even if you are not able to contribute financially to this cause, I would ask that you contribute by realizing the struggles people with mental health issues and drug addictions face. Thank you so much for listening.
