There are just too many ways in this life by which stability can suddenly turn to sand. We've seen the consequences of that reality, made worse when governments and societies fail to support people wherever we can: violence on public transit and on the streets, sky-high rates of addictions, mental health crises, past-capacity shelter systems, contested public spaces. For those of us who live in cities, especially in Toronto, we love these places and want to enjoy our lives in them, but it can be hard to remember that they only work when we all live together in them, and when we do the work that's needed.

<br>We need to make homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring; until then, we need to support the people working so hard to create bridges so folks don't fall through the gaps. These are unquestionably enormous issues, and it can be so hard to wrap your arms around and do something about.

<br>On February 22, Danielle and I are going to try to do our small part, by doing the Coldest Night of the Year walk again. Together with thousands of Canadians across the country, we're raising funds in support of Sistering, an incredible and hugely important organization in our new west-end community that provides many services, including low-barrier practical and emotional support to women and gender-diverse people in Toronto. If you can support us in a cause close to our heart, and a shelter near to our home, we'd so appreciate it.
