In Canada, aging can sometimes make people feel less visible and less valued. Over the years, I have worked alongside older adults in nephrology, dermatology, and stroke recovery, supporting them through some of life’s most challenging moments. I also had the chance to collaborate with international and national researchers, where I learned how strong communities can remove barriers and create opportunities for people of all abilities.
For the past two years, I have been part of Oasis, a program that helps older adults stay active, connected, and engaged where they live. I have seen how simple things like a communal meal, a wellness program, or a small act of inclusion can help someone regain their confidence and sense of purpose.
This work has become personal. My own parents are growing older, and there are times when I see them feeling isolated or unable to do the things they once enjoyed. It reminds me how important it is to build communities where aging is not a limitation.
On September 20, 2025 at MacDonald Park (2 King Street West, Kingston). I will be walking in The Grand Parade with Reshma’s team, Miles for Generations. The name reflects our belief that every step we take brings generations closer together. It is a way to honour older adults and to support programs that keep them connected and thriving.
