I need your help.
One day the summer before last, I was at a drive thru waiting for food. It was really hot out, and the sun was going down. A woman came to the passenger side of the car while the cashier handed me the bag. The cashier knew her and called her by name saying that she had not seen her in a while.. It all happened very fast. She reached in my passenger window, opened the door and sat down. Obviously, I was startled. I had not had someone get in my space that way before. She was obviously pregnant. I pulled forward just a tiny bit so that people in line could see me. She faced me and said she was pregnant and needed help. I asked if she was okay or in pain and she said she needed help to get down the road to the motel that she was living in. I dont know why I chose to not freak out, but I didn't. I listened, I gave her the food I had but she wouldnt take all of it. I drove her where she was going. I gave her some cash. I gave her my phone number. I told her that there was a place that she could try but she needed to call me later because I did not have a phone number. I asked if there was anything else I could do. She was sobbing and still appologizing but she promised me she would call. When she did finally call, the number I gave her was Shelter of Flint. I never heard from her again.
People outside of the city dont necessarily come places where our homeless polulation is seen. It's a part of my life in this town that I decide not to ignore. I feel it. I can't look at all the ways I have been blessed and think that it's just for me. I know my purpose is to serve others. I am hoping that you all will help me donate to this shelter. Every year, they have a walk to help raise money to bring a little bit more than just physical structure to people who truly need it. Most of who they serve are under the age of 10.
I would like to raise a thousand dollars. I would like to hope the young pregnant woman I helped went there... and I know it cost them more than a thousand dollars to take care of her for a while and get her on her feet.
If you feel moved to help, I would be so very grateful.
