My Message

Welcome to my fundraising site in support of my volunteer efforts with CUSO-VSO and Youth Opportunities Unlimited in Kingston Jamaica!

Did you know?

The actual cost for CUSO-VSO to send ONE volunteer on a project for a year is over $30,000. Multiply this by over 200 volunteers sent overseas per year!!! I have made a personal commitment to raise $5,000 to assist in the recruitment, training, development and support of future volunteers such as myself! Please join me on my endeavour!

Why am I doing this?

For those who know me, this announcement probably wasn’t a surprise to you. Cross-cultural understanding, continuous learning, sharing skills, building new skills, world citizenship and the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to exercise their fundamental human rights; these are just a few reasons. Basically, I am just trying to make a difference in the world, one tiny act at a time!

I believe in CUSO-VSO’s vision of bringing people together to share skills, creativity and learn to build a fairer world, and their commitment to long-term, sustainable solutions…and not just immediate aid. I am also thoroughly impressed with CUSO-VSO’s commitment and dedication to the recruitment, development, preparation and overseas support of their volunteers! But mostly their commitment to fighting poverty and disadvantage to build a fairer world.

Why Kingston, Jamaica?

To quote a good friend of mine “the world needs more courageous people (like me), that aren’t scared to at least try to make a difference!” I then began to question…why? On so many levels…why? Why did Kingston pick me? Why did Youth Opportunities Unlimited pick me? Why is the youth crime rate in Kingston so high, and the unemployment rate so low? Why are so many youth left with little opportunity? Why are there such vast differences in their socio-economic condition? Why am I sitting here questioning why, when I could be trying to do something about it? So off I go to try and answer my questions…and hopefully play a small part in a solution.

You will be a wonderful asset to the team in Jamica. You are special person and your willingness to make a real difference, put your career on hold and share your skills and expertise with those in need is commendable. Scotiabank has sent the perfect ambassador for this program and your CUSO-VSO team will soon realize how lucky they are. All my best, be safe and hurry back!

I am so very proud of you Coreena. What you are doing is wonderful and courageous. To lead by example is something we should all aspire to and you are setting the bar very high. Your life will never be the same after this experience as you reach out to help others in need. You know that you will have some low, lonely days but always remember you family and friends back home and how you inspire us to be better. God speed; be safe; have fun; treasure the experience.
