Welcome to Team SickKids World Transplant Games

Gold Coast, Australia

August 22-30, 2009

In 2007, 17 heart transplant recipients traveled to Bangkok, Thailiand and successfully represented Canada at the 16th World Transplant Games.  In 2009, SickKids hopes to have an even bigger adventure and represent Canada at the Games on the Golf Coast in Queensland , Australia!

The World Transplant Games is more than a sporting event.  It's the world's largest organ donor awareness event.  The purpose of the Games is "to visibly demonstate the benefits of successful organ transplantation, work to increase public awareness of its success and thereby increase organ donation rates, as well as promote the full rehabilitation and wellbeing of our participants" (WTGF).

The World Transplant Games first started in 1978 and included teams from 4 countries with just under 100 competitors.  The Games have grown to include over 68 member countries and 1500 participants.  The competitors are unique in that each one of them is alive as a result of a successful organ transplant.  World Transplant Games Competitors demonstrate the level of health and vitality that can be achieved after transplantation.

This team this year will include heart, lung, kidney and liver transplant recipients.  Each transplant athelete is responsible for funding this trip of a  a lifetime - and we know they'll appreciate your support.  Read our athletes stories so you can discover how truly amazing they are.

We look forward to your support for 2009.
