Risky Gene Machine - Fighting Hereditary Cancer
Amount Raised
Fundraising Goal $1,000.00

Our Message

The HBOC Society's aim is to ensure timely access to quality health information and services for those affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome.  HBOC syndrome is caused by inherited gene mutations, so is often referred to as having RISKY GENES.  Risky genes cause high rates of breast, ovarian and prostate cancer and slightly higher rates of some other types of cancer in affected families.  Hereditary cancer is not only diagnosed more often, but at much younger ages, has a higher rate of recurrence and tends to be more aggressive, making it harder to treat.

At least 3-5 times more people carry risky genes than have MS, so this is not a small problem.  However, awareness remains so low that most of the people with risky genes don't even know it yet, so can't take advantage of the medical recommendations in place to save their lives.  Lack of awareness also means hereditary cancer is downplayed and grossly under-funded, causing a marked lack of resources and targeted services for those that need it the most.

The HBOC Society is the only organization in Canada actively involved in awareness, advocacy and the funding of services and research initiatives for this cause.  Do you have risky genes?  If not, you probably know someone that does.  Please help us make a difference.
