My name is Kiley Mahoney and I am 15 years old and have Cystic Fibrosis (CF). It feels weird to introduce myself that way as I’ve never wanted my illness to define me or hold me back from doing anything, but it is undeniable that it has shaped who I am today and had such a huge impact on my life and my family’s. As I type this, I sit in a hospital bed at Sick Kids Hospital, having been admitted for the second time in 45 days. In total, I have spent over 800 days in hospital in my 15 years. My typical stays are two weeks and include hundreds of needles, three types of IV antibiotics, chest physiotherapy, and inhaled medications. When I am at home, my days consist of a similar routine, with the exception of oral or inhaled antibiotics as opposed to IV antibiotics. I also take pancreatic enzymes (about 50 a day) because of pancreatic insufficiency due to CF. As I get older the harder things get as I understand more about the illness and how random and devastating it can be. It’s hard to miss out on fun things, like the outdoor ed trip I will be missing with this stay. It can also be a frustrating illness as from the outside people can’t tell I’m sick and I’m always conscious of being the girl with the annoying cough. However, the toughest part is knowing this disease is chronic and there is currently no cure and the even harsher reality is that people in their teens, 20’s and 30’s die from this disease. Your own mortality is a hard thing to accept when you’re 15. Now that I have depressed everyone, I must point out the positives! I have a hugely supportive family who have taught me that my illness does not define me and I can do anything I put my mind to. I was brought up to live every day to the fullest, as it’s not a life if you are “living” it, anticipating bad things to happen. They love me unconditionally, even when I am having a breakdown when things get too overwhelming (never happens lol). We also still laugh a lot and always try to see the positives in life (our favorite saying is it could be worse!). I also thank all of you for your generous donations and support. With this, I do have hope that a cure will be found and I can go back to being a normal teenager.
