Our Message

The 2019 edition of Betty’s Run marks the 9th year our family, friends & colleagues will be participating in the Betty’s Run for ALS.

A few months after Shelagh’s ALS diagnosis in November 2010, we found out about the annual major fundraiser for the ALS Society – the Betty’s Run for ALS.  Shelagh immediately wanted participate and help raise funds.  When I asked Shelagh what she wanted to name her team, she thought about it for a moment, and said the “Green Team”, in celebration of her Irish heritage.  We became “Shelagh’s Green Team" and entered our first Betty’s Run in 2011, raising over $40,000 in our first year.

Shelagh had the distinct honour of serving as the Ambassador for the 2012 Betty’s Run, our second year of participation. She cherished this honour and delivered a powerful and moving speech on a cold Sunday morning in June 2012 - please see the YouTube video link in the photo montage section. And another $40,000 in donations for the ALS Society.

Our third year of participation in the 2013 Betty’s Run was Shelagh’s last one, as she passed away the following month in July 2013.

Today Shelagh’s Green Team represents family, friends & colleagues who come out to honour Shelagh’s tenacity, perseverance, positive attitude and celebrate her motto  “I am living with ALS, not dying from ALS” .  We are also honouring my childhood friend, Rick Skopik, whom I have known since I was 3 years old, who passed away from ALS last November, and my cousin Joanne Dipalo Mclennan who passed away in 2004 from ALS.

Over the last eight years, through our participation in the Betty’s Run and with corporate donations, we have raised approximately $175,000 in Shelagh’s name.  There has never been  a single organization to touch our lives, and had such a profound impact on our lives, as the ALS Society of Alberta.  That is why we are so passionate about supporting them and the work they do for those "living with ALS", and those who love, cherish and care for them.

2019 will mark the addition of a new Co-captain to the Team - Eleanor (Ellie) Mikulak, our second grandchild.  Ellie will join her brother Oliver as co-captains of our Team
