Our Message

Months after celebrating my first wedding anniversary in 2014, I noticed some unusual twitching in my arms and legs while vacationing with my wife in Costa Rica. Soon after, I was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 52. Instead of looking forward to establishing a home and thriving in career and community, my wife and I we were doing our best not to deny the opposite reality.

Given the multiple causes of ALS, its numerous disease pathways, and the different ways and rates at which ALS progresses and the variations in survival, I have been struck by the immense challenges researchers face in developing a treatment or cure for the disease. That’s why I believe so strongly in Project MinE, an international genetic research partnership of which Canada is a part.

Project MinE will compare the genomes of people with ALS with the genomes of people who do not have ALS, in order to better understand the causes of the disease. This is a tremendously exciting proposition that uses the knowledge, technology and resources that are available today to try to create a better future for people with ALS and hopefully alleviate a lot of pain and suffering.

Project MinE fills me with great hope as it will make ALS easier to study and has great potential to lead to effective treatments. owever it’s an expensive undertaking. I am the ALS Canada ambassador for Project MinE and have created “Team McCauley” to help fundraise for Canada’s contribution to Project MinE, led by ALS Canada in partnership with a strong team of Canadian geneticists and ALS clinics across the country.

My efforts in support of Project MinE are my way of thanking the many people without whose help I would not be alive today. Team McCauley’s goal is to raise $50,600, which is enough to map 20 people’s DNA profiles.

I hope you will consider supporting Team McCauley and Project MinE. Here are a few ways you can help:

-    Make a donation to Team McCauley. A suggested donation is $110, which will map 1 pair of chromosomes, but you are welcome to donate any amount.

-    Join Team McCauley by clicking on “Join the team” above. By joining Team McCauley you’ll have the ability to engage your friends and family in supporting Team McCauley’s fundraising goal.

-    Create your own fundraising team for Project MinE by contacting Tracey Adams at the ALS Society of Canada (tadams@als.ca). If a total of 50 teams can raise a similar amount to Team McCauley, we’ll have raised enough to map 1,000 people’s DNA profiles!

I am calling on my family and friends -- as well as small businesses, corporations, community groups and individual Canadians -- to support this very worthy cause. Every dollar adds up and will get us closer to our goal.

Purchased a chromosome today in support of Judy Srgo's private members bill M-105, that is currently before the house of commons. Successful passage of this bill will provide $10 M in funding for Project MinE and allow for the genome sequencing of 3000 Canadians. Hope we can unravel the complexities of this disorder and find effective treatments and a cure.
