Team Cassie and Friends

Our Message

On June 25, 2017 we are running to raise money for all the kids affected by Juvenile Arthritis and other rheumatic diseases in BC and and to help and support the parents and family members who face this disease with them everyday.

Over the last 10 years, Team Cassie and Friends has laid it all on the course for kids with arthritis. Our team of 100 runners and walkers, from toddlers to grandparents, have transformed the lives of kids and families diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis and other rheumatic diseases in BC and across Canada.

But, there is still so much more we can do to support and connect families, fund critical research and raise awareness - we hope you'll join us! Make a gift or sign up to be a part of our team on this amazing day for kids and families.

To register, please use our charity pin codes (all child registrations will be reimbursed): 5K -17CFS5K or Half Marathon- 17CFS21K

Here's some more info about Juvenile Arthritis, highlights of what we've achieved and the story of how our team first got started!

Facts about Arthritis in kids:

3 in 1000

Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is the most common cause of chronic disability in children in Canada. 24,000 kids - or every 3 in 1000 - are affected. That's just as common as Juvenile Diabetes and far more prevalent than leukemia, cystic fibrosis and other "better-known" childhood conditions.

Lack of Awareness Hurts

Despite being so common, most people still aren't aware that kids can get arthritis. Because of that lack of awareness, many children will endure months of debilitating pain (written off as growing pains, sports injuries or even behavioural issues) before being referred to a specialist. This can have serious consequences for a child's growing body and can lead to life-long disability.

It's painful, serious and incurable.

JA is not just a kid-sized version of adult arthritis; it’s a severe, auto-immune condition that, when left untreated, can lead to blindness, inflamed organs, permanent disability, anxiety and even depression – not to mention a stolen childhood. There are no cures and few treatments are safe and effective for a growing child.

About Cassie Friends

Cassie Friends Society is Canada’s only charity dedicated 100% to kids and families in the pediatric rheumatic disease community. We are transforming lives through:

1) Research into safer and more effective treatments

2) Supporting and advocating for the Juvenile Arthritis community and

3) Providing trusted information to kids and families to help them stay resilient and positive as they face their condition  -  and to let kids be kids!

Our Team's Story

Cassie was only two-years old when arthritis changed her and her family’s life forever. One day, she was a happy, energetic and vibrant toddler and the next, she could no longer walk.

When Cassie’s parents, David Porte and Debbie Setton, first faced the terrifying and confusing news of her diagnosis - can kids even get arthritis? - they started searching for information and a way to connect with other parents who could help them make sense of the countless doctors visits, tests, medications and worst of all, their child’s excruciating pain. They found nothing.

Through the Scotiabank Run and by sharing their story with friends, family and anyone who would listen, the Porte Family brought together an incredible community of kids, parents, families, doctors, researchers, nurses, healthcare workers, businesses and friends all dedicated to transforming the lives of kids and families living with arthritis. That group is known today as "Cassie and Friends" - a registered charity that raises awareness for Juvenile Arthritis, supports and connects affected families and funds critical research for a better today and brighter tomorrow.

Thank you for being a friend!
