Friends of Robbie and Jane 2019
Amount Raised
Fundraising Goal $5,000.00

Our Message

The 35th Anniversary of the Scotiawealth Danny Gallivan Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament is quickly approaching on July 4, 2019 at Halifax’s Old Ashburn Golf Club!

As many of you already know, a group of us began fundraising many years ago to sponsor a 'Friends of Robbie & Jane' hole at the tournament. Our goals are to ensure that both Robbie and Jane continue to have a strong presence at the golf tournament which has been such an important event in the Thompson's lives, and to further help fund the research needed to find a cure for CF, once and for all.

We lost our close friends Robbie and Jane to their fight against Cystic Fibrosis. It has now been 21 years since we lost Rob (March 1998 at the age of 23) and close to 16 years since we lost Jane (July 2003 at the age of 26). Watching how Rob and Jane dealt with the challenge of fighting this disease was an inspiration to all of us.

The ‘Friends of Robbie & Jane’ hole continues to honour our dear friends Robbie and Jane and create a visible statement for Donna and Ian Thompson, Robbie and Jane’s amazing parents.  This is our chance to challenge ourselves and support a cause that, as you know, has had a dramatic effect on Donna and Ian and all of Robbie and Jane’s dear friends.

Extraordinary progress has been made in recent years. Some senior scientists, who’ve made it their life’s work to study CF, believe we’re on the verge of redefining cystic fibrosis as a “chronic disease,” not as a fatal disease.

Without doubt, this is a time of historic importance in the CF fight.

Some of you will recall that the US drug company Vertex (the sponsor of Wednesday night's reception at the Tournament) introduced the first ever drug to attack the cause of CF, not just the symptoms. That drug was suitable for only a sub-set of persons with CF.

Since then, two more drugs for different sub-sets of persons with CF have been introduced and, literally, dozens more drugs are “in the pipeline.”

Meanwhile, in a complementary development, Cystic Fibrosis Canada has launched a campaign to raise $7.5 million over five years to ensure we can rapidly deploy the optimum “cocktail” of drugs – the old drugs and the new drugs -- for each person in Canada with CF. The result will be substantially better care delivered more quickly with better outcomes for CF patients in Canada, and beyond.
