WHY?

Despite the unfortunate predicaments of our status regarding social distancing, getting up and doing productive activities outside of the safe enclosure of your home can get a little tricky. Thankfully, Blue Doors, an organization that supports families, woman, men, and children that are stuck in situations that have led them to be without a safe and warm home to go to, created the Charity Event Coldest Night of the Year that involves walking together virtually to raise awareness towards homelessness in and around Canadian regions.

With the current state our society is in with this pandemic, we tend to forget that there are people out there right now that do not have sanctuaries to call home. Participating in this charity event Coldest Night of the Year will be able to provide you and your families with the opportunity to make a change within your community as well as to speak-up about important topics such as the declining stability of housing in not only York region but Canada as a general whole.

By supporting organizations such as Blue Doors you become apart of a group of people that are benefiting towards the greater quality of life for not only others but yourselves as well.

FACT CHECKED: Homelessness, does not just arise in the city; it occurs in suburbia to. The Government of Canada stated in its 2019 Shelter Capacity Report that 41% of shelters are in areas with populations of 300,000 or less despite 80% of shelter beds being centered in higher populated places of 300,000 or more people.

FACT CHECKED: Homelessness DOES NOT “just happen” to people. Blue Door’s, online website clarifies that homelessness can result from mental health instability, loss of income, change in socioeconomic status, outrageous increases in unaffordability in the renting and buying market, and/or from simply life predicaments.

FACT CHECKED: Subconscious Discrimination and stereotyping are the key reasons why we tend to ignore the reality of how people reach the point of not having a place to call home. NOT ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE HOMELESS ARE ADDICTS OR HAVE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

Did you know? ...that 75% of Blue Door’s clientele state that their overall health has improved from the assistance provided by this organization.

Did you know?... that Blue Door’s has the largest York Region Emergency housing program with approximately 102 beds available for families needing immediate assistance.

Did you know?... that nationally there are only 423 emergency shelters as stated through The Government of Canada’s 2019 Shelter Capacity Report, with 16, 271 permanent beds FOR ALL OF CANADA when there is approximately 235, 000 Canadians annually facing some form of homelessness as described on the Canadian encyclopedia page on Homelessness in Canada 2019.
