Kente Stole Project

St. Thomas University’s Black Students’ Association has worked with the university to introduce the Kente Stole to St. Thomas University’s Convocation ceremony.  It is the association's intention to put in place a physical commemoration of the obstacles and differences St. Thomas University black students overcome in order to graduate. The Kente Stole is an emblem which honours the legacy of their black ancestors and a testament to each black graduate’s strength and excellence.

What is a Kente Stole?

Adapted from African tradition in Ghana, this woven cloth (which was once only worn by royalty) is a scarf-like garment worn over the shoulders. Similar to standard graduation stoles, they
typically represents some type of accomplishment, graduation or other rites of passage.

Please Note:

The deadline to reserve your Kente Stole (either to borrow or purchase) is March 18. You can do this by contacting the BSA at blackassociation@stu.ca.

Payments for purchased and customized stoles will be required by March 25. This can be done on this page.

Stoles are available to be borrowed. Borrowing will likely mean the stole is blank, while purchasing will give you the option to customize.
