School Program- Beyond Getting Kids Active

We had one student who didn't participate at the beginning. She'd stand at the back of the gym and watch what was going on. As we moved through the sessions she slowly began to participate more. She began to smile and look up at Kim while instructing. This was such a huge milestone for her. By the time we got to the dance component of the program she was right there following all the movement instructions and doing what everyone else was doing. No matter how much I tried I could not get her to participate like this. We saw a different side to this student and she really enjoyed her time with Kim and participating in the GoodLife4Kids School Program.

We received these awesome cards on our last day at the school (and lots of hugs). Inside, the students wrote what they enjoyed most out of the things we taught them. Some of these notes really tugged at the heart - "You made me feel good about my body" and "You made me a better dancer because you taught me to be stronger and that girls have muscles." And then there was the boy who was the biggest handful who was weeping when we walked away.

Our kids have really developed their gross motor skills to be able to participate in school and community programs. Their social skills have really improved in terms of eye contact, communication with leaders and peers.

Hello, my name is Jojo and I am a grade 5 student with autism. Due to your generous donations I have been able to enjoy bowling with my M.E. (Multiple Exceptional) class and I have had many strikes. Every week I enjoy swimming class with 12 other friends at the pool and I learned how to swim the front stroke and dive.

Easter Seals Newfoundland & Labrador- Wheelchair Basketball Program

As an infant, I suffered a stroke that resulted in Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. I don't let these conditions hold me back but the truth is it's often difficult for me to play in stand-up leagues. I've always loved basketball and there was no way I wasn't going to play it.

Being a wheelchair basketball athlete has taught me how to be a team player, good sportsmanship skills, and the many benefits of exercise. It's given me the confidence to pursue my goals and to always believe in myself
