Dear Hospice Friend,

My name is Mary Jane McArthur and I’m a retired nurse, proud mother of Lucy (my Golden Retriever), and volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospice. Like many others who choose to work in healthcare, I dedicated my time and talent to helping others. However, four years ago the tables turned and the roles were suddenly reversed. At age 62, I was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and after 36 years of caring for others, I became the patient.

During my career I was introduced to St. Joseph’s Hospice. I remember touring the facility on Windermere Road shortly after they opened their 10-suite residence in 2014. I was amazed by the expert medical, psychological, and social support offered to clients and families at no cost. Now that it’s my time to find the best care possible, I know St. Joseph’s Hospice is where I want to be. Like others living with a palliative illness, I want a quiet, private, space to spend time with my family and friends. I want to maintain a sense of independence. I want to be in an environment that embraces personal choices and feels like home - St. Joseph’s Hospice offers just that at no cost.

Cancer is now in my bones and lungs. I use a feeding tube and my body no longer has the strength to continue with treatments. I’m stable for now but I live for each and every day. In today’s world it’s often difficult to talk about death, but to me, it’s a celebration. I’m going to make my last journey the best it can be!

For me, part of living means giving back. During the tour, I realized Hospice not only survives on generous financial donations but also by volunteers. Individuals give of their time across all services within Hospice including pet therapy. As a proud dog owner, I jumped at the chance to become a volunteer with Lucy. Every Monday you will find Lucy enjoying a visit with residents and I feel honoured to be part of each family’s journey. When people ask me if there’s anything I need, I ask them to support St. Joseph’s Hospice.I ask you to give today. You may also make your donation by phoning (519) 931-3462 or online at sjhospicelondon.com. Big or small - your gift will ensure St. Joseph’s Hospice continues to provide renowned programs and services at no cost for our community.

From the bottom of my heart – thank you,

Mary Jane McArthur & Lucy
