Jamie's Race to Raise... A 7 day, 250km self-supported foot race across the Gobi Desert in Support of Prostate Cancer Canada. The Gobi march begins June 2, 2013 Hi, my name is Jamie Burke. I’m a 23 year-old entrepreneur, adrenaline junkie, a loyal friend with a passionate and optimistic attitude who thrives on growth and contribution. I’ve spent the majority of my life training and practicing independent alternative sports; It’s not that I’m not a team player – I’m a great one – I just love the experience of challenging myself and pushing myself as an individual. I first experienced this at a young age when I began training 4 hours a day, 6 days a week as a competitive gymnast. I spent a decade on my BMX bike that led to me competing at a professional level, I’ve surfed great lakes in the dead of winter…and lastly but not limited to the odd ATV ride through a Colombian jungle and playing tag with sharks in Belize. With the recent loss of my grandfather and witnessing others very close to me go through the harsh trials of Cancer, I’m now about to push myself to an entirely different level both physically and psychologically. I’ve entered my first endurance race: a 7 day, 250 km self-supported foot race across the Gobi Desert. I have an ambitious feat ahead of me…but it is one that that doesn’t nearly come close to the battle individuals experience while fighting cancer. This is what I want to showcase throughout my journey by training, raising money for PCC and of course throwing myself into the desert for a 7-day race. There are 2 important factors that keep me driven and motivated: 1. Being able to support and raise money for a cancer foundation so close to home emotionally will be a truly gratifying and touching experience. I purposely chose this endurance race to be my first ever marathon to relate, on a metaphorical level, to the intense and unexpected battle cancer victims experience. 2. From a very young age I’ve attempted to live and breathe by this quote: “find your potential then challenge it”. It’s taken me 2 decades but I feel as though I have found my potential and this endurance race is another way I am challenging it. I want to inspire and prove to others that anything is possible…Discover your path, build a door and smash through it. The sky’s the limit. The slogan ‘Race to Raise’ will be associated to the fundraising campaigns I am developing. This is obviously a play on words but the deeper aspect of it is the struggle and challenge for what I plan to achieve…the experiences I will endure not only physically, but also emotionally and intellectually over the course of the next 7 months. My name is Jamie Burke and I am prepared to challenge my potential. So, come along for the journey and join me in the fight against cancer. Follow me: Please Donate
