Early reports suggest that more than four million people have been
affected by Typhoon Haiyan, with the coastal city of Tacloban suffering some of
the worst damage, including an estimated 10,000 dead with numbers of victims
expected to rise.
Typhoon Haiyan has caused a devastating loss of life, as well as
a devastation of local homes and buildings. The severe destruction of
local infrastructure has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people,
whose needs for humanitarian assistance will undoubtedly extend long after the
storm has ended.
Ve’ahavta is currently
assessing the local needs with its partners, including the 44 members of the
Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief, of which we are an executive member and
the sole Canadian representatives. Ve’ahavta is also consulting with the
Israel Trauma Coalition, which has sent an advance team to assess the local
needs and develop a rapid response. Ve’ahavta will also be reaching out
to Toronto-based Philippine organizations and institutions to assess how we may
contribute to local efforts to support those affected by this crisis.
