FINDING PEACE IN GOD’S WORD
Sarojamma lives in Kappalammapalya, about 30 kms from Bangalore. This community served as a relocation area for slum dwellers like Sarojamma and her family. But like most slum communities, Kappalammapalya doesn’t have proper sanitation, medical facilities or roads.

Karnataka Evangelistic Association (KEA) started work there in 2013, particularly among women and children. Every Wednesday, Sarojamma is one of the 30-40 people who gather for prayer and Bible study at a local church conducted by KEA. It is through these Bible study sessions that Sarojamma received her Bible and learned about the hope that Jesus offers.

One of her favourite Bible verses is Matthew 11.28: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Sarojamma said, “Whenever I go through problems and difficulties, I apply this verse to my life, and I always find God’s peace and rest that the world couldn’t give.”

Help bring the message of Christmas to slum dwellers in India

The slums of India are known worldwide for their extreme poverty. It’s a place heaped with piles of trash. A place so poor and neglected that human waste fills the streets. A place no one wishes to live. Yet about 70 million people – twice the population of Canada – call it home.

Every day, people in the slums deal with alcoholism, exploitation of women, domestic violence, illiteracy, and superstitious beliefs and practices. But in this darkened, destitute place, people are finding hope and meaning in life. Christ is born in the hearts and lives of people every day – experiencing Christmas in its truest sense. For that is what Christmas is all about – Christ coming to earth so that we will have a transformed, meaningful life filled with hope.

This hope is found in the Bible that people receive through the various programs that the Bible Society of India (BSI) and the Canadian Bible Society (CBS) support, such as:

  • Bible-based literacy programs for women and children;
  • Weekly Bible study program initiated by local churches; and
  • Bible-based workshops on health awareness and domestic violence.

You can help bring the true meaning of Christmas to people in the slums by making the Bible available.

• $50 will provide 5 families with the Good News of Christ’s birth

• $100 will place the Bible in the hands of 12 people

You can bless someone today with the most beautiful Christmas gift: their own personal Bible. It’s a gift that doesn’t have to wait until December; a gift that brings hope and transforms lives.
