VIVIAN’S STORY: SUSTAINED BY THE WORD

Vivian is the wife of Angel Lopez, the Bible Society staff member who was killed by unidentified assassins in Honduras. Below is her testimony.

“It is one thing to hear about violence and another thing to experience it.

“My husband Angel was an aspiring journalist, full of life. He worked at the Bible Society of Honduras. In 2012, our daughter Abigail was four years old and we were expecting our second child with excitement and joy. One day in November that year, Angel dropped Abigail at school and was waiting to get a cab to go to work. Out of the blue, two mercenaries approached him on a motorcycle and shot him point blank.

“My whole life turned into one of despair and darkness. His murder was classified as a fluke and went unpunished like so many in Honduras. I had a constant feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. I also lost my baby due to the stress. Only the Word of God sustained me during that time.”

Help fight violence with God’s Word in Honduras

Honduras was the “murder capital of the world” over three years ago. At that time, homicides were averaging at more than three a day.

The violence came closer to home when a Bible Society staff member was murdered in 2012. Angel Lopez’ death deeply impacted the Bible Society in Honduras. But amidst the violence and pain, a new program emerged, one that would fight violence with God’s Word.

Since the program started, prayers are being answered. Today, Honduras is not the same country it was in 2014. Since the Word of God has been widely distributed among members of the national police and the Armed Forces, statistics show that violence is decreasing. To be precise, homicides in Honduras are down by 22.5% in three years!

The program works by teaching biblical principles at police schools, influencing the military with spiritual principles, and changing the lives of people in prisons through God’s Word. In the process, people are learning about their purpose in life and violent offenders are compelled to change their ways.

When one of the most violent countries in the world is asking for assistance to provide Bibles, we hope that you will join the Canadian Bible Society in saying “yes.”

Together, we can help fight violence through God’s Word in Honduras. Your support of:

• $30 will provide a Bible to three people in Honduras.

• $50 will provide five police officers with their own copy of the “Poverty and Justice Bible”.
