The latest issue of the Word@Work features stories from the Canadian Bible Society’s visit to Nicaragua in January. Most of these stories are first-hand accounts shared by the CBS Team led by Reg Graves, CBS’ Major Gift Officer. Also included in this issue are actual photos from the visit.

Bringing hope from God’s Word in the darkest circumstances in Nicaragua

It’s one thing to hear about lives impacted with God’s Word, but it’s another story when you come face to face with them – put faces to names, see where they live and their circumstances, and hear from their own lips how God changed their lives through His Word.

It happened to one of our colleagues, Reg Graves and a few supporters who joined him in a trip to Nicaragua where they visited two projects supported by the Canadian Bible Society: Hope and Smiles for Children with Cancer and Yes, There is a Solution to Domestic Violence!

The Hope and Smiles for Children with Cancer focuses on providing spiritual support to young cancer patients – and their families – undergoing treatment at the La Mascota Hospital in Managua, Nicaragua. The Bible Society in Nicaragua, in partnership with CBS, not only provides practical help through volunteers who assist patients and families with their needs, but also provides spiritual support by praying with them, sharing encouraging words and making the Bible available to them. The support these families receive are very much appreciated, as testified by one mother, “During the most devastating times, their words of support and prayer were there. With the Bible I received, I learned that God has a great purpose for our lives and that his plans are perfect.”

The program, Yes, There is a Solution to Domestic Violence, is carried out through partner churches. Trained church workers conduct workshops to educate families in their neighbourhood about domestic abuse in the light of the Scriptures. One of those impacted by this program is Rafael who acknowledged, “My wife suffered greatly from my rage.” God reached out to him through the program; he came to faith, was delivered from alcoholism, and is now preparing to enter the ministry!

As one CBS Team Member said, these programs “must continue to be funded on a long-term basis. The Bibles are precious to them.” By giving to our work in Nicaragua today, you will help make this happen. Here’s how you can support these two important projects:

• $30 will help 4 children receive their own copy of the Bible.

• $50 will help deliver “Stop the Violence” biblical portions to 65 women affected by domestic violence.

• $100 will help equip volunteers and pastors to minister to 14 people battling cancer.

Thank you for your generous support today!
