JOHN OAKLEY: DELIVERED FROM ADDICTION
We love sharing John Oakley’s story. He did a 180-degree turn from drug addiction, thanks to the power of God’s Word. He loves writing poetry; here is one of his compositions:

“Out of the darkness pit there is, Jesus, a lonely place of nothingness,
Where addiction takes full control and abuse brings a feeling of hopelessness
In a life that feels it has no purpose, one that only leads to the grave,
Within your mighty right hand, Jesus, you hold the only power there is to save.”

These words were inspired through God’s Word. John testifies: “The Word totally comes alive to me today that the poetry the Lord gives me is so profound it just blows me away.” Watch his video testimony here.

Help make God’s Word available to those in need of a second chance

Substance abuse is prevalent all around the world. In Kenya, alcoholism and drug abuse are silent disasters that claim many lives every year. In Guatemala, juvenile detention rates have skyrocketed due to drug trafficking and gang activity. And in India, men living in poverty often numb themselves with alcohol, wreaking havoc on their families.

Here in Canada, substance abuse is responsible for 47,000 deaths every year! That’s a huge number, and what’s alarming is that most drug users start very young (15-16 years-old).

While people become addicted to drugs and alcohol every day, many are also given a choice to abandon their addiction. Unfortunately, they are not able to leave their addiction on their own as, more often than not, the addiction is caused by a deep-seated hurt or longing in their lives. The Canadian Bible Society and its partner organizations recognize that, unless God heals these hurts and addresses these longings, people will not experience true transformation in their lives. By making the Bible available through agencies dealing with substance abusers, we are helping those in this situation find true healing and a second chance at life.

In celebration of Thanksgiving Day, please consider making a gift today to help make the Bible available to those struggling with alcohol and substance abuse. Here’s what your gift can do:

The Canadian Bible Society is partnering with the Bible Societies of Syria, Austria, Lebanon and Jordan to address the spiritual needs of refugees by providing Scriptures.

• $50 will provide 20 Scripture portions to educate people about substance abuse.

• $100 will provide 20 Bibles for people in drug rehabilitation centres.

• $260 will help train two volunteers to help counsel individuals and families about alcohol abuse.

This Thanksgiving, we are indeed thankful, especially for each of you. Your generosity is transforming men, women and children through the Scriptures they receive, in Canada and around the globe.
